Introduction
So who is Kirby? Kirby is a pink puffball who has appeared in almost 30 games. He is basically a sphere with short, stubby arms and ovals for feet. His face consists of two narrow eyes, rosy cheek-blushes, and a mouth. He has a small mouth that can expand to become giant when he uses his signature move of inhaling enemies. Kirby may look cute, but he is a strong fighter, even appearing in the Super Smash Bros. series. He can run fast, fly by inhaling air, and copy the abilities of enemies. Kirby can inhale almost anything, and his favorite thing to inhale is food. In fact, his voracious appetite has landed him in more than a spot of trouble. He lives on the planet Popstar or Pop Star, in the kingdom of Dream Land. His age is never directly stated, but he has been referred to as things like "little boy," but also things like "jolly fellow," so it is hard to tell. Kirby does not speak much, except for things like, "HI!" and "Poyo!" as well as saying the names of abilities in Super Smash Bros. such as Captain Falcon's Falcon Punch. |

History
Since Kirby`s Dream Land for the Game Boy in 1992, Kirby has been one of the best-known Nintendo characters. He was designed in 1992 and his original name was Popopo during development. Originally, Kirby was a lighter pink (white in Kirby`s Dream Land) with pointier arms, a smaller face, a pointier mouth, and lines instead of ovals on his cheeks. In Kirby`s Dream Land, Kirby didn't have his signature copy ability. Instead, he could only shoot air out of his mouth at enemies to defeat them. In subsequent games, however, Kirby can inhale and swallow enemies, copying their abilities.
In 1993, Kirby's Adventure was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System. In Kirby's adventure, Kirby kept his original design, but he gained the ability to copy enemy powers.

Gameplay
Most Kirby games are side-scrolling 2D platformer games, which are often bright and cheerful, with colorful stages and enemies, simple controls, and upbeat music. Most Kirby games are linear, starting from simple stages like peaceful grassy meadows and ending up at castles, or even in space. Most Kirby games feature a plot that focuses on either something bad happening to Kirby, or something bad happening to Kirby's planet, or sometimes even the universe, and Kirby stopping it. Usually, the game is split into levels, with a mid-boss about halfway through and a more difficult boss at the end. Usually the main villain is some kind of ultimately powerful force, such as Nightmare. As well as these main games, Kirby also has a number of spin-off games like pinball or a golf-like game called Kirby's Dream Course. |
Characters
Most Kirby games feature King Dedede, the self-proclaimed ruler of Dream Land as a main villain. King Dedede is larger than Kirby, has a beak-like mouth, and is blue in color. He wears royal robes, including a large red coat and a hat. He looks more like a penguin, he can inhale like Kirby, and carries around a large hammer. He can fly and inhale things like Kirby, so it is speculated that they are the same species. King Dedede has been in every Kirby game except for Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Another important character is Meta knight, who was first introduced in Kirby's Adventure in 1993. He looks like Kirby, except he is a darker blue or black, with white eyes and a suit of armor that includes his signature mask. Meta Knight fights with a sword, and can fly with the help of his retractable wings. Unlike Kirby, he actually talks, as well as pilots the huge spaceship, the Battleship Halberd. Although King Dedede and Meta Knight are usually villains, they sometimes help Kirby on his quests, like in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, where they are playable characters along with Kirby and the basic Kirby enemy, Waddle Dee. Meta Knight and King Dedede also appear in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U. |
